L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco – A Unique and Stunning Addition to Your Aquarium

The L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus sp.) is a striking and highly sought-after freshwater fish known for its unique coloration and peaceful nature. With its striking black and white zebra-like stripes, this pleco stands out as one of the most beautiful and exotic fish in the aquarium trade. Native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, it is a member of the Hypancistrus genus, which includes many attractive plecos. The L129 pleco's bold contrasting patterns and its relatively smaller size make it an ideal choice for aquarists looking to add a unique and eye-catching species to their tank.

Despite its fierce appearance, the L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that is perfect for community tanks. It thrives in well-maintained aquariums with stable water parameters and appreciates a tank with plenty of hiding spots and caves. As a nocturnal species, it is most active during the evening, where it will scavenge for food, contributing to the clean-up of the tank.

Care Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 30 gallons (114 liters) for a single L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco. If you plan to keep more than one, a larger tank of 50 gallons or more is ideal. They prefer spacious tanks with hiding spots.

  • Water Temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C), with a stable temperature.

  • Water pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5 - 7.5).

  • Water Hardness: Soft to medium (4-12 dGH).

  • Filtration: Strong filtration is essential for maintaining clean and well-oxygenated water. The L129 pleco produces a moderate amount of waste, so efficient filtration and regular water changes (at least 25% weekly) are necessary.

  • Diet: Omnivorous. The L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco is primarily herbivorous but also enjoys occasional protein-based foods. Offer them high-quality algae wafers, sinking pellets, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. Supplement their diet with occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp to ensure a balanced diet.

  • Tankmates: Peaceful. The L129 Chocolate Zebra Pleco is best kept with other peaceful species, such as tetras, rasboras, and small or medium-sized cichlids. Avoid housing them with aggressive or overly active fish that might stress them out. They may become territorial with other bottom-dwellers, so make sure there is plenty of hiding space.

  • Lighting: Moderate lighting. While they don't require intense lighting, moderate lighting will help show off their stunning zebra markings. Providing shaded areas and hiding spots is important to allow them to feel secure.

  • Decor: Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and rocks for the L129 Pleco to hide in. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate is ideal as they enjoy rooting around in the substrate for food. Be sure to have enough hiding spaces to keep them comfortable, as they are nocturnal and prefer hiding during the day.

  • Water Quality: Regular water changes and strong filtration are essential to maintaining high water quality. The L129 Pleco is sensitive to poor water conditions, so it’s important to keep water parameters stable and clean.
