A peaceful, active fish, the Crystal Parrot Cichlid is sure to be a conversation starter and a beautiful addition to any freshwater aquarium.
Care Requirements:
Tank Size: Minimum of 55 gallons (208 liters) for a single Crystal Parrot Cichlid. A larger tank is recommended if keeping a group or if you plan to add other tankmates.
Water Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C), with a stable temperature.
Water pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5 - 7.5).
Water Hardness: Soft to medium (5-12 dGH).
Filtration: Strong filtration is important for maintaining clean water. While the Crystal Parrot Cichlid is not overly sensitive, they thrive in stable, clean water, so regular water changes (25% weekly) are highly recommended.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a well-balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They also enjoy vegetable matter such as spirulina, zucchini, and peas. A varied diet is key to ensuring their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Peaceful and ideal for community tanks. Crystal Parrot Cichlids do well with other peaceful or semi-aggressive fish that are similar in size, such as tetras, rasboras, and other cichlids. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species, as they may stress out the parrot cichlid.
Lighting: Moderate to bright lighting helps enhance their vivid colors and brings out their full potential. Provide areas with shade or hiding spots where they can retreat if they feel threatened.
Schooling: These fish are generally peaceful and enjoy the company of others of their species, but they are not schooling fish. A pair or small group can do well together if provided enough space.
Decor: Provide plenty of rocks, driftwood, and plants to create hiding spots and encourage natural behaviors. The Crystal Parrot Cichlid enjoys swimming and exploring, so a well-structured tank with some open swimming space is ideal. A fine gravel or sand substrate is recommended for the best environment.
Water Quality: Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for maintaining the health of your Crystal Parrot Cichlid. Ensure the water is stable and clean, as these fish are sensitive to poor water quality.
