Adolfo’s Catfish – A Unique and Peaceful Addition to Your Aquarium
The Adolfo’s Catfish (Corydoras adolfoi) is an eye-catching species of freshwater catfish that is perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarium enthusiasts. Native to the waterways of the Rio Xingu in Brazil, this stunning fish is known for its distinct golden-brown coloration with a beautiful pattern of black stripes running along its body, making it one of the most attractive Corydoras species.
With its peaceful temperament and active nature, Adolfo’s Catfish is an ideal addition to community aquariums. Like all Corydoras, they are bottom dwellers and thrive in well-planted tanks where they can scavenge for food. Their small size and gentle behavior make them perfect tankmates for a variety of species, and they’re known for their social nature, so keeping them in groups will help them feel secure and active.
Care Requirements:
Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (75 liters) for a small group. Larger tanks are preferred for better water quality and more space to explore.
Water Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C), with a stable temperature.
Water pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5 - 7.5).
Water Hardness: Soft to medium (4-12 dGH).
Filtration: Moderate filtration is essential, as Corydoras require clean water. A gentle current is ideal, as they are not strong swimmers.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, live or frozen foods (such as bloodworms and brine shrimp), and occasional plant matter like blanched spinach or zucchini.
Tankmates: Peaceful and compatible with other small, non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, and peaceful shrimp. Avoid keeping with larger or aggressive fish that may outcompete or harm them.
Lighting: Moderate lighting. Corydoras enjoy dimly lit tanks with plenty of hiding places.
Schooling: Best kept in groups of at least 4-6 individuals, as they are social fish and feel more secure in the company of their own kind.
Decor: Provide plenty of plants, driftwood, and smooth rocks to create a natural environment. A soft substrate, such as fine sand or smooth gravel, is essential to prevent injury to their sensitive barbels.
Water Quality: Regular water changes are essential to maintain optimal water quality. These catfish are sensitive to poor water conditions, so ensure filtration is efficient and the water remains clean.
